Origins of circus pole

In India, the martial art of mallakhamb, or pole wrestling has been practised since the 11th century. Legend has it that a young boy learnt the art from the monkey god, Hanuman and then was able to save his entire village from enemy attack. Nowadays, children from the age of 4 learn and compete on a wooden freestanding pole.
